Live Decisions of Congress 2024

Motion 107

Gaza – Immediate Ceasefire, Release of Hostages and De-Escalation

“That this Congress notes with daily horror, the relentless killing and devastation in Gaza, now subject to claims through the International Court of Justice (ICJ) of a genocide being perpetrated against the Palestinian population.

“The destruction of whole neighbourhoods, residential buildings, healthcare facilities, schools, universities, mosques, churches, designated places of safety, and the withholding of water, food, and fuel amount to collective punishment of the civilian population.

“The brutality and violence of the Hamas attacks on October 7th must be condemned but cannot justify the indiscriminate killing of over 24,000 people so far, including the deliberate targeting of journalists, and, rescue and aid workers.

“The escalation into attacks on Yemen will do nothing to reduce tensions in the Middle East or resolve the source of this decades long conflict, notably the illegal occupation of Palestinian land, the regular expansion of illegal settlements and associated settler violence, supported by the Israeli state, and the widespread imprisonment without trial of Palestinians by the Israeli Government.

“This Congress sends our solidarity to those on both sides who have courageously sought to build dialogue and joint activity in the most appalling and challenging circumstances. This includes those in Israel who have opposed the occupation, defended Palestinian rights and argued for a peaceful and democratic solution.

“We send our solidarity to firefighters and other emergency service workers, delivering humanitarian service in the most appalling conditions. We will seek to build support and send practical solidarity where possible.

“Congress calls on the General Council to continue to pressure for a permanent ceasefire, the return of hostages and the cessation of acts of escalation in the Region.”
