Effective Voice
We recognise the GMB for collective bargaining, enabling staff to have an effective collective voice and raise matters as and when they wish to. We also ensure all staff have regular support and supervision meetings with their line manager and weekly team meetings to ensure they are well supported and able to raise any issues.
Security
We are a living wage employer, we do not use zero-hour contracts, and we oppose the use fire and re-hire. We offer a generous pension scheme as well a range of family friendly policies such as support with childcare costs.
Respect
We take the health and safety of our workforce very seriously. We have recently moved to purpose-built offices and our Director of Operations meets regularly with the GMB’s health and safety rep to ensure any health and safety concerns are recognised and addressed. We have a Code of Conduct setting out our expectations of everyone who works for the STUC. We offer to pay for mental health counselling for any staff that request it.
Opportunity
We invest in a generous training and development programme that offers staff a range of learning opportunities. We are committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace: all new jobs at the STUC are openly advertised internally and externally. We anonymise personal details and remove educational establishments at the shortlisting stage of recruitment. We are a “two-ticks” employer and all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria are guaranteed an interview. 18% of our current workforce are BME and 23% consider themselves to be a disabled person. 80% of our senior leadership team are women. We have recently concluded a Job Evaluation and now all staff are part of a unified pay and grading structure. An Equality Impact Assessment was carried out as part of the Job Evaluation. The report shows that our overall Gender Pay Gap has narrowed to 3.2%, which is significantly below the UK average.
Fulfilment
Our line managers undertake training aimed at ensuring their staff are best supported to use and develop their skills and have some control over their work. All members of staff set personal objectives on an annual basis, so they are clear as to how their work contributes to the overall strategic priorities of the STUC.
