Young Trade Unionists to discuss the economic crisis and Scotland’s future

June 22nd 2012

Young trade union members from all over Scotland will gather in Glasgow this weekend (23/24 June) to debate a wide range of issues affecting young people today in the workplace and in Scottish society.

Speaking ahead of the 72nd Annual Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Youth Conference the Chair of the STUC Youth Committee, Mark Lynch from the construction workers union said

“Young people today face many challenges, not least the threat to their futures posed by the youth unemployment crisis, the United Kingdom Government has to accept that their austerity measures are not only ineffective in rebuilding our economy but they are threatening the future of young people in Scotland and throughout the United Kingdom”

STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith said

“In addition to the very serious youth unemployment problem we face, young trade union members will quite rightly have an important role to play in the forthcoming debate on Scotland’s future and this conference will determine how this can be achieved.

“We also recognise the impact that austerity measures are having on young people throughout Europe and we are delighted to be welcoming visitors from Avoalot in Catalonia and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.
