Commenting on the latest official labour market statistics published today, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:

“The further fall in unemployment and more significant rise in employment confirmed in today’s figures are to be welcomed. The challenge will be to sustain this modest improvement in the labour market through the headwinds of the Coalition’s spending cuts and the uncertainty created by ongoing crisis in the Eurozone.

“Despite the small fall in women’s unemployment revealed in today’s statistics much work remains to be done if the recent steep rise is to be reversed. The STUC enthusiastically welcomes both this afternoon’s Scottish Parliament debate on Women and Work and the Scottish Government’s commitment to deliver on the STUC’s recommendation to hold a Women’s Employment Summit. The STUC will continue to engage constructively with Parliament and Government to ensure that the Scottish response to the high levels of women’s unemployment is as effective as possible”.
