Parliament calls for a Better Way for Scotland

June 21st 2011

Speaking in advance of the Members debate in the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday 22nd June, Grahame Smith STUC General Secretary said

“The STUC‘s priorities remain Jobs, Services, Fair Taxation and a Living Wage.

“The ‘There is a Better Way Campaign’ calls for action on jobs, particularly tackling rising youth unemployment; for investment in public services, caring for and protecting the most vulnerable; for fair taxation and addressing the current crisis in local taxation; and continuing to build support for the Living wage to be paid to all workers in Scotland.

“We hope and trust that the Parliament and the Government will at all times be focused on achieving these goals, creating a fairer Scotland for all”

Scottish Parliament Members Debate 5pm Wednesday 22nd June

S4M-00003 Elaine Smith: There Is A Better Way—That the Parliament supports the STUC There is a Better Way campaign; believes that cuts are neither unavoidable nor inevitable and that they would actually threaten economic recovery across Scotland and impact on areas such as Coatbridge and Chryston; considers that a sensible and sustainable response to the current economic crisis is contained in the People’s Charter; understands that public sector cuts are likely to have a disproportionate effect on women, children and disabled people, and would welcome widespread support for the STUC campaign and local campaigns such as those in North Lanarkshire and West Lothian.
