This year’s Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Highlands and Islands Conference will be held on Saturday 11 June in the Town House, Inverness. Building on the STUC’s national campaign, the theme of the conference will be ‘There is a Better Way in the Highlands and Islands’. Key note speakers at the conference are:

• Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary;

• Stewart Stevenson MSP, Scottish Government Minister for the Environment and Climate Change;

• Calum Macpherson, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and joint chair of the Moray Taskforce

There will also be a special ‘There is a Better Way’ session involving speakers from Moray TUC, Wick Wants Work and Thurso and Wick TUC who will discuss current challenges and local campaigning activity in their areas.

Workshop sessions will be held on;

• Unions and apprenticeships

• Women and local campaigning

• the Economic case against cuts

The conference will close with a Q&A panel session involving the following MSPs:

• Mary Scanlon, Conservatives

• John Finnie, SNP

• David Stewart, Labour

[note - the Liberal Democrats were unable to field an MSP]
