Dignified work dignified lives - STUC Annual Disabled Workers Conference in Dundee 5th - 6th December

December 4th 2009

The annual Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Disabled Workers Conference will commence Saturday 5th December in the Apex Hotel Dundee

The conference takes place amidst growing concern over unemployment and its impact on the employment of Disabled Workers. Unions fear that as unemployment increases disabled workers are facing unfair selection for redundancy or are being managed out of employment because of health issues or through capability.

A motion to be discussed by the conference recognises that employment opportunities for disabled people has improved since the recession of the early nineties but warns that “we must ensure that we stop the clock from turning back.”

The conference agenda will highlight fears over the impact of public spending cuts on disabled people and calls on the STUC to enter dialogue with the Scottish Government about single outcome agreements and their ability to deliver best quality services for children and young people with additional needs

The conference will also hear support for the appointment of an “Article 19 Champion” to ensure that public bodies ensure that a proportion of their public sector contracts are reserved for sheltered workplaces.

On Saturday at 12.30pm the conference will be addressed by Alex Neil MSP, Minister for Housing and Communities in the Scottish Government.
