November 13th 2009

Event: Scotland United Against Racism & Fascism

Venue: Nelson’s Column, Glasgow Green

Time and date Assemble 12 noon Saturday 14th November

Trade unionists, politicians, faith groups and organisations campaigning against racism will join with supporters for a ‘Day of Celebration’ to mark Scotland’s rejection of racism, fascism, and Islamophobia.

In his speech at the event Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary, in reference to the activities of the Scottish Defence League (SDL) will say

“Wrapping yourself in the Saltire or wearing a t-shirt with William Wallace on it, or waving a union jack and singing Rule Britannia doesn’t make you a patriot - particularly when it’s accompanied by a Nazi salute.

“By being here today we are showing that we will not accept any section of our community being the target of intimidation or hatred.

“By being here today we are saying loud and clear that an injury to one is an injury to all.

“By being here today we are saying that the SDL or the BNP and their vile views are not welcome in Scotland.

“By being here today we are showing that we believe in a Scotland that values equality and cultural diversity.”

Mr Smith will also highlight the annual STUC St Andrew’s Day anti racist march and rally being held in Glasgow on 28 November – ‘a future free from racism’

After hearing from other speakers the assembly will march to George Square where the event will conclude with a 2 minute silence at the Cenotaph.
