STUC and NUS Scotland Sign Up for a Fairer and Brighter Future for Students and Young Workers

October 7th 2009

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) and the National Union of Students (NUS) in Scotland will today (Wednesday 7th October) sign a protocol to combat the exploitation of students and young workers in the workplace and throughout Scottish society.

Speaking before the signing STUC General Secretary, Grahame Smith, said

“It is vitally important in the current economic downturn that the mistakes of the past are avoided to prevent another lost generation.

“Many students and young workers are facing uncertain futures as in previous recessions. Young workers and graduates are a vital and invaluable element in the country’s recovery from recession.

“This protocol will strengthen existing links between the STUC Youth Committee and the NUS in Scotland and we look forward to working to protect and improve the rights of young people in Scotland.”

Liam Burn President of NUS Scotland said

“Students are working longer hours to avoid poverty and minimise their reliance on commercial debt. Now more than ever it is vital that students know their rights in the workplace.

“The STUC and NUS Scotland have a combined membership of over a million people in Scotland, and we fully intend to use that strength to bring about some positive changes for students and young workers.”
