Speaking today STUC General Secretary, Grahame Smith, said:

“The STUC was saddened to learn of the untimely death of Bashir Ahmad MSP, and we send our deepest condolences to Mr Ahmad’s family. The election of Mr Ahmad to the Scottish Parliament in 2007, as the first Black MSP, marked an important milestone, and he will be a significant loss to our Parliament”.

Sofi Taylor, the Chairperson of the STUC Black Workers’ Committee said:

“The STUC’s Black Workers’ Committee was so pleased when Bashir Ahmad was elected to the Scottish Parliament, as the first Black MSP. We were delighted to welcome him to our Annual Black Workers’ Conference in October 2007. His death is a great loss to the Parliament, and to minority ethnic communities in Scotland”.
