STUC LGBT+ statement on Conversion Therapy

April 8th 2022

The STUC LGBT+ Workers Committee supports a comprehensive ban on all forms of conversion therapy, as detailed by End Conversion Therapy Scotland.

LGBT organisations across the UK have line up to condemn the UK Government’s failure to protect trans people by excluding them from the proposed ban of conversion therapy.

Our worker movement is long used to reactionary forces trying to play divide and rule, pitting different groups against each other to weaken us all.

It's clear that the Tory Government at Westminster, facing dropping poll figures, are now reliant on nothing more than populist wedge issues imported from the hard-right playbook to distract from their own failures.

Chasing headlines by politicising and condoning the torture of trans and non-binary people, in order to distract from their own failures to govern and the rising numbers of people forced into poverty, is abhorrent.

We will not fall for such tired and predictable tactics. We are proud to see over 100 organisations, including the TUC, healthcare charities, and faith groups, not falling for this either, and withdrawing from the UK Government’s failed pinkwashing event “Safe to Be Me”.

This Committee, and the trade union movement in Scotland, will accept nothing less than a comprehensive ban in Scotland and will continue to pressure our Parliament on this. We support all trade unionists and organisations in England & Wales in opposing these divisive tactics to seek the same there.
