STUC statement on Chile elections

December 6th 2021

The STUC and our affiliates trade unions movement have long supported the struggle for democracy and human rights in Chile, whether through the the workers at Rolls Royce in 1974 who refused to work on Air Force parts for the Pinochet regime or through welcoming political prisoners who arrived during the dictatorship.

We are alarmed at the threat posed by the candidacy of far-right José Antonio Kast in the upcoming 2021 Chilean elections. Kast has celebrated and defended the Pinochet regime. We also condemn recent police repression against democratic protests over the past two years.

The far right is a threat to workers and all citizens wherever it raises its head. We are in full solidarity with our trade union sisters and brothers in the CUT Chile.

In the forthcoming election there is a clear and progressive alternative to the far-rights’ politics of hatred and fear. We send our best wishes and total solidarity to all Chileans who are working in these elections to defend democracy, social justice, workers’ and human rights.

¡No Pasaran!
