Bright spots in Scottish Government Budget announcement clouded by failure to fund local government services. Clear need for more accountability from business receiving support.
STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:
“We welcome the announcement of additional hardship payments to help address the increasing levels of poverty in our communities and support the desire to ensure that every penny reaches those in need.
“However, the additional £275 million for councils does not meet the scale of the challenge faced by local government, not least the need for a decent pay rise for key public workers.”
“As expected, the Finance Secretary extended business rates relief as soon as she was able. We continue to argue that any subsidies for business must be directly linked to safe-guarding jobs and limited to those that make that pledge. We support the Finance Secretary’s support for the National Union of Journalists’ recommendations on conditions surrounding financial support for the media.”
