STUC Responds to Fair Work Convention Report

December 15th 2020

As the Fair Work Convention releases their “Fair Work in Scotland” report, the STUC is calling on employers and government to take action to ensure that all workers in Scotland have “Fair Work”.

Roz Foyer, STUC General Secretary, stated:

“We agree with the Fair Work Conventions assertion that more needs to be done to make Fair Work a reality in Scotland. Particularly for disabled workers, ethnic minorities, women and young workers who, as the report states, often face poorer fair work outcomes and are often more heavily concentrated in precarious and low paid work.

“We welcome the call for conditionality to be attached to all support provided to businesses during the pandemic and beyond. This conditionality must ensure that all workers are paid at least the real living wage, have access to a voice in the workplace through a trade union and on a contract that provides stable hours. We have a real opportunity here to build a better post-pandemic world, free from precarity, and the Scottish Government should use all its levers to ensure this.

“Moving forward, employers and Governments need to go much further than the report recommends to truly ensure that all workers in Scotland experience fair work.”
