STUC ‘Leap Day of Action’ signals unions’ intent to continue the fight against the trade union bill and build membership and capacity

February 27th 2016

On 29th February, the extra day in 2016, unions and employers in Scotland are coming together to demonstrate opposition to the Trade Union Bill and an intent to build positive industrial relations based on strong trade unions.

The Scottish Government, a range local authorities and the NHS have made available space and facilities for unions to promote membership and union activity. Unions are holding stalls inside and outside workplaces and town centres will be leafleted.

STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith said:

“We continue to fight against the Trade Union Bill which would breach the fundamental rights of workers to organise and seeks to reduce the access workers have to workplace support. Today’s activities are a clear statement from unions in Scotland that these latest attempts to undermine us will not succeed and we intend to emerge stronger and even better organised.

“I am delighted that so many employers have recognised the value of strong unions and workplace collective bargaining and are making clear their opposition to the Bill.

“Today is about promoting positive industrial relations with employers who support workplace organisation; building membership and celebrating the hours of time every week that union reps put in voluntarily to supporting members.”
