STUC General Secretary to address Catalan Trade Unions on Scotland’s Independence Referendum

March 28th 2014

Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary, Grahame Smith will address a special conference organised by the Confederación Sindical de Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) of Catalunya on Monday 31 March 2014 to discuss the STUC ‘A Just Scotland" initiative and the Scottish Independence Referendum. CCOO is one of Catalunya’s main trade union organisations. The Conference is part of the 91st Anniversary events commemorating the murder of "Sugar Boy" (Salvdor Segu) who was assassinated by employers’ gunmen on 10 March 1923.

Speaking ahead of the event Grahame Smith said:-

“There is great interest in the debate currently taking place in Scotland. Our international trade union colleagues are interested about how we have sought, through our ‘A Just Scotland’ initiative, to ensure that the STUC’s social justice agenda and vision of the type of Scotland we want for the future is at the heart of the Referendum debate.

“This year the CCOO Catalunya will be intensifying its campaign for the ‘right to decide’ Catalunya’s future relationship with the rest of Spain, by focusing, as the STUC has done in Scotland, on presenting a progressive vision for Catalunya based on equality and the extension of social and labour rights and the importance of structures which involve the social partners in building a new social and economic structure in Catalunya.

“We are happy to share our experience and research with our Catalan colleagues as a contribution to their demand for the right to self determination and to the debate about their future.”
