Community wealth building is a way of helping wealth remain in communities, and to prevent it from leaking away into the pockets of executives, landlords and multinational companies.
Originally developed in Cleveland, USA, it is the philosophy behind the ‘Preston Model’, in which Local Authority procurement policies have been oriented towards local companies and coops, and is supported by a number of economists, thinktanks and left-wing politicians.
This seminar will hear from leading advocates and practitioners, including:
Sarah McKinley, Director for European Programs for the US-based Democracy Collaborative
Joe Cullinane, the Council leader pioneering community wealth building in of North Ayrshire
The Belfast Cleaning Society – a worker-owned cleaning coop.
Chair: Jennifer McCarey, Glasgow Trades Council
